Rock in the Rec - Literally! - Installed as of Weds 18th June 2003

Inspired by the fact that this year’s event fell on the Solstice - the longest day of the year- a megalithic rock was installed in Arborfield’s recreation ground.  Not one from Stonehenge however...

It began when a copy of House & Garden magazine fell open at a page advertising Time Circles of Cranleigh, south of Guildford, who supply such stones.

Martin bought the one in the centre

Martin Smith of Arborfield Tree Care sponsored the large stone (he’s standing left of it) with pictish inscriptions while Ted Barter of White House Motors in Winnersh sponsored two smaller ones.  Martin also assisted in installing the stones.  These community-minded sponsors share the wish to enhance their local area, to the benefit of everyone.

The stones, in the form of three or four tons of granite, form the centrepiece within an alleyway of oak and other trees, themselves planted by local people in memorium to lost ones.
