The Hall

Rock On The Rec 2001 was organized to raise funding for improved facilities in the local village hall.  This is why...

Helen Reed-McGregor explains “There is a desperate need for disabled access and toilet facilities, a doctor’s surgery and waiting room. Not forgetting a parish office which will be open to the general public”.

“The nearest proper doctor’s surgery is in Swallowfield, but there is no bus route there”.

“So, anyone  without their own transport has to rely on the doctor’s 3 times weekly visit. Then, he has to operate out of a tiny room next to the stage in the village hall”. What a performance! Helen described this as being “not much bigger than a broom cupboard”.

When the extension is built the doctor will be present 5 days a week and will have much improved facilities. There will be a sink and even a waiting room.

That’s where it will go...

The village hall management committee has raised £30,000 over the last three years. This is to be combined with developer funding money from the Ministry of Defense of approximately 75 – 80 thousand pounds. Helen has applied for the funding and expects to receive confirmation of it soon. Currently there is a shortfall of 8 to 10 thousand pounds.

The Village Hall is owned by every resident of Arborfield, relying on

dedicated volunteers, charity funding and rental fees for its upkeep. “Most of the local tradesmen have worked on it over the years at cost or for no fee. It is very well used by the villagers for both practical and fun purposes. Helen Reed-McGregor, the main organizer of Rock On The Rec, is a key member of Arborfield’s Village Hall Management Committee. She explained “It really is a village hall in the true sense of the word because everyone in the village uses it.”.

Seventy years ago, residents purchased a brick each, while local architects and builders turned it into a reality. From the beginning, the Hall’s design allowed for an extension to be added at a future date. Seventy years on, it at last looks like it’s going to happen.
